The Borough of Poole Council has approved plans to install energy-efficient LED street lighting across the town.

17,420 lights will be replaced over the next 6 years estimated to cost £10 million.

The council said that the new LED lights would improve street lighting, improve safety, reduce energy costs and reduce carbon consumption. The costs for street lighting in the area had more than doubled in the last 10 years with lighting using a quarter of the town’s carbon usage.

Councillors have approved borrowing to meet the cost of the replacements. The lights were originally planned to be part of a part-night lighting scheme but will remain switched on with the new LED lighting

Despite the hefty upfront cost of £10 million the council expected to save £20 million in energy costs within 30 years.
