New streetlighting in Cumbria is expected to have a great impact on energy bills in the coming years.

The county council are spending £7.6 million over three years to replace 12,000 high-wattage street lights with energy efficient LED light bulbs. It is expected to save £430,000 a year on street lights due to lower energy usage and reduced maintenance.

The council currently spends £3.7 million on street lighting, £2 million of that is spent on energy.

Cabinet member for Highways, Keith Little, said:

We want to cut our energy bills and there are ways of using modern technology to do that.
